🥞 What is Okonomiyaki? 🇯🇵

Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き) is a Japanese savory pancake that is popular as street food and home cooking in Japan. The name “Okonomiyaki” means “grilled as you like it”, referring to the many variations of ingredients you can add. It is crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and packed with delicious flavors! 😋

Ingredients:

  • Batter:
    • 180g chopped cabbage
    • 20g green onion or leek
    • 90g wheat flour
    • 10g cornstarch
    • Dashi powder (or substitute with vegetable broth or omit, to taste)
    • 100ml water
    • 1 egg
  • Filling:
    • 10 shrimp (you can also add pork, seafood, cheese, etc.)
  • Toppings:
    • Okonomiyaki sauce
    • Mayonnaise
    • Seaweed powder
    • Katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes)

Instructions:

  1. 🥣 Mix the flour, cornstarch, dashi powder, and water in a bowl until smooth.
  2. 🥬 Add cabbage, green onion, and egg. Mix well.
  3. 🍤 Heat a pan over medium heat and add some oil. Pour half of the batter into the pan and spread evenly.
  4. 🔥 Add shrimp (or other filling) on top, cook for 3-4 minutes, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  5. 🍶 Drizzle okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise over the pancake.
  6. 🌿 Sprinkle with seaweed powder and katsuobushi before serving.

  • “Yaki” (焼き) = Grilled/Fried 🔥

It is a quick, flavorful, and juicy dish made by stir-frying thinly sliced pork in a sweet and savory ginger-soy sauce. 😋

Ingredients:
200g pork (or beef steaks)
5g grated ginger
4 tbsp soy sauce
Chili powder (to taste)
Instructions:

🔥 Heat a pan over medium heat and cook the pork slices until browned.
